Bookshelf Porn … You’ll Know it When You See It

This is not my beautiful house, but oh, how I wish it were.
Look at those books!  Shelves and shelves of them!

And wow! Get a load of this bad boy!  Gorgeous!

I’m feeling flushed and giddy!  Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I just spent the afternoon in the self-indulgent pursuit of the biblio-rotic.  I’m talking about Bookshelf Porn.  That’s right, I’ll cop to it, and I won’t be ashamed!

Bookshelf Porn as the website says “is porn for book lovers.  A photoblog collection of all the best bookshelf photos for people who *heart* bookshelves.”

nom-nom-nom: Clair Olivia WaymanI’m a book lover.  I ♥ all things book, and after spending time at this site, I have to admit that I ♥ bookshelves, too.  Now I’m lusting after about 99% of the shelves I gawked at.

All this book love made me think of my favorite Groucho Marx quote:

“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend.  Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.”

While we’re on the subject, Groucho also said,

“I find television very educating.  Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”

I’ll admit, I probably spent nearly two hours looking at all those gorgeous bookshelf pictures, so now,  if you’ll please excuse me … I need to go read.

Take that, Kindle!

  1. This is brilliant! Thanks for sharing! I am an absolute nut when it comes to books, and you have just given me another reason to indulge! I really wish my house was covered in shelves with books as brilliant as these 🙂

  2. Love all of them, Olivia. I want a wall of shelves just like that one in the first photo.

While I’ve been reading on electronic readers for ten years now, I still have books everywhere in my house. And always will.

  3. Whoa, I love that. I want an awesome bookshelf one day. I might turn one of the spare bedrooms in one and hire a local teenager from a woodshop class to do it, or a kid going to CalState a few blocks down. If I can afford it that is.

It makes me sad that I’m reading more and more via iBooks on my ipad. >_<

  4. Kevin, I’m not anti-Kindle. In fact, I love how much the Kindle and its ilk have brought reading and books into the news (and the marketplace) in such a big way again. I’m happy to hear, after ten years with an e-reader, you’re still stepping over books. Vive le livre!

  5. Olivia, loved the post. I think I’m gonna make some shelves like the ones falling…wonderful. Funnily enough I am just about to start making a new bookcase for home. I’ll post up progress on my site when I get started. We have a couple o’ things in common (besides loving books and writing)..I love Groucho too and am also reading Keef ! Have a creative day !

  6. Thanks for all the wonderful comments. I’m happy to learn I’m not the only one with bookshelf envy! The falling over bookshelf was surprising and wonderful, if inefficient. Now that you’ve seen the site, are you inspired to do something else (or something more) with your shelves at home? Mine are looking a little dull in comparison.

  7. I’m right there with you Olivia. I discovered this site months ago when someone had tweeted a link to it, and I was shocked to find that I had spent nearly three hours doing nothing but gawking!
How in the world are those books on that crooked shelf Staying on the shelf?! Crazy, but I love it!

  8. Easily the most original post I’ve seen in a while, and you’re right, those are fantastic! I love the one that looks like it’s falling off the wall but it’s not.

    Nicely done, Olivia!

  9. Thanks, Tom! I’m humbled by your comment, especially considering how much I enjoyed your blog and look forward to following you through the end of your blogging year.
